Desdemona: Upper class, a modern woman with an adventurous streak. She is not meek and mild but going out and experiencing life. Married to Othello. Age 20-35
Emilia: Maid to Desdemona, works mostly in a domestic back room of the palace in Cyprus. She has a strong Irish accent. Married to a soldier, Iago. Age 25-35
Bianca: A woman with a thriving “business”. She could be described as a “woman of the night”, but works all hours. Attractive. Cockney accent. Age 20’s
Desdemona, A Play About A Handkerchief by Paula Vogel. A Pulitzer prize winning playwright who has won multiple Obie awards for off broadway productions.
From 2008 to 2012, Vogel was Eugene O’Neill’s Professor of Playwriting and department chair at the Yale School of Drama as well as playwright in residence at the Yale Repertory Company.
This play looks at the lives of three women and explores a different life for them. They are not the women prescribed by Shakespeare’s “Othello”, although the story of “Othello” is still there. It is as if they have escaped the confines of the story and are living a life alongside it. However, the story in shadow becomes more of a dark reality as the play progresses.
The play requires strong female leads. It is bawdy, funny, and poignant.
